The xDrive oil pan, and why the engine will not fit without it

All-wheel-drive BMWs often use a different sump and oil pickup. How to check the pan on a used engine so it actually fits the car.

A rear-wheel-drive 320d and an xDrive 320d can share an engine code and still refuse to fit each other. The front axle and the driveshaft pass through the space where a simple sump would sit. BMW shapes the oil pan and the pickup around that shaft. Order the wrong pan and the engine will not sit on the mounts, or it will sit and starve of oil.

Why the pan changes

xDrive cars carry the propshaft forward under the engine. The pan is shallower in that area and the pickup tube is routed around it. Some chassis also change the pan between left-hand drive and right-hand drive, and between a saloon and an X model, even when the engine code matches. The code tells you the block. The car tells you the pan.

How to check

Look at a photo of the sump, not only the top of the engine. A deep rear-wheel-drive pan is obvious next to a shallow xDrive pan once you have seen both. If you still have the old engine, photograph its pan before it goes to scrap. We compare that photo with the unit in the yard.

The pickup, the windage tray and the sump gasket belong with the pan. A bare block plus "we will use the old sump" only works if the old sump is undamaged and the pickup matches the block. A cracked xDrive pan is a common result of a front impact. Do not reuse it.

Do not swap pans blindly

Bolting a rear-wheel-drive pan onto an xDrive block, or the reverse, can leave the pickup in air or foul the axle. It is not a saving. Tell us whether the car is xDrive when you send the VIN. The seventeenth character is not where that fact hides: the VIN lookup is.

Pickup and oil level

After the pan is on, the oil level is set with the pickup that belongs to that pan. Too little oil and an xDrive pickup draws air in a corner. Too much, and the crank whips it. Use the capacity for that exact pan, which is not always the capacity printed for the rear-wheel-drive version of the same engine code.

If you transfer a pan, transfer the baffle and the pickup screws as a set, and use a new gasket. A seeping xDrive pan looks like a rear main seal and the engine comes out again for nothing.
