Match the engine stamp to the listing

The badge on the boot is not the engine code. Where the stamp sits, how to read it, and how we check it against the engine you are about to buy.

An engine block in the Hamburg workshop

A 320d badge has covered an N47, a B47 and more than one power tune of each. The engine you need is the one stamped on the block and stored against the VIN, not the chrome on the tailgate. Most wrong orders we stop are people who ordered from the badge.

Badge versus stamp

The sales name is a trim. The engine code is a specification: displacement, fuel, tune and often the emissions set. N47D20C and N47D20D are both "320d" in someone's memory. They are not the same chain, and they may not be the same turbo. The listing title on our site carries the code because that is the part you are buying.

How to find your BMW engine code

Where to look

On most BMW engines the code is on the lower side of the block, near the bellhousing or below the exhaust manifold, and it is repeated on a sticker in the engine bay if the sticker has survived. It is a short group such as B47D20A or N55B30A. Dirt, underseal and a heat shield hide it. Clean a small patch. Do not grind the casting.

If the engine is already out and the stamp is unreadable, the VIN of the car still identifies the factory engine. A donor engine must match that code, not a code from a forum post about a similar car.

What we send you

Before an engine leaves, we photograph the stamp and the sump. You should be able to read the code in the photo and see the same code in the listing. If you cannot, do not pay. Ask the desk for a clearer photo. That check is part of the sale, not an extra.

Stickers lie, castings less so

A sticker on the cam cover can be from another engine in the same bay. The characters cast or stamped into the block are the ones we match to the listing. If underseal has filled the digits, clean them. Do not trust a marker-pen code written on the valve cover by a previous workshop unless it agrees with the metal.

When you reply to us, quote the code you can read, not the code you hoped the car had. We would rather correct the order while the engine is still in Hamburg.
